Walailak University Civil Engineering Students Gain Real-World Experience through Construction Site Visit at Thai Obayashi

On 23 March 2026, the Civil Engineering Program, School of Engineering and Technology, Walailak University, organized an off-campus study visit to provide students with an opportunity to learn directly from a real construction site operated by Thai Obayashi Corporation Limited, a leading international construction company from Japan. The company has extensive expertise in a wide range of large-scale construction projects, including high-rise buildings, industrial plants, major commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects.

The study visit was part of the program’s commitment to promoting experiential learning among civil engineering students. The activity aimed to help students connect theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom with actual practices at a construction site. Students were introduced to various aspects of construction operations, including project planning, site supervision, project management, coordination among different teams, as well as quality and safety standards required in professional construction environments.

By visiting an active construction site, students were able to gain a clearer understanding of the overall construction process, from site preparation and execution according to design plans to quality control and project monitoring. The experience also helped students better understand the roles and responsibilities of civil engineers in real working situations, where professional knowledge must be combined with careful decision-making, analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration with specialists from different disciplines.

In addition to technical knowledge, the study visit emphasized the importance of construction site safety, systematic work processes, compliance with professional standards, and the working culture of an international construction organization. These are valuable lessons that cannot be fully gained through classroom study alone.

The activity also broadened students’ perspectives on future career opportunities in civil engineering. Students were able to learn more about possible career paths in construction supervision, project management, structural and civil design, quality inspection, and other related fields. The experience also helped them identify the skills and competencies required to work effectively in the construction industry.

Off-campus study visits are an important part of the learning approach of the Civil Engineering Program, Walailak University, which places strong emphasis on developing students with both solid academic foundations and practical experience. Such activities help prepare students for internships, cooperative education, professional training, and future careers after graduation.

The Civil Engineering Program, School of Engineering and Technology, Walailak University, would like to express its sincere appreciation to Thai Obayashi Corporation Limited for the warm welcome and for providing students with an opportunity to learn from a real working environment. The knowledge and experience gained from this visit will contribute significantly to the students’ professional development and help prepare them to become competent and professional civil engineers in the future.
