Walailak University’s School of Engineering and Technology Supports Ban Laem Homestay’s Transition toward Sustainable Green Tourism

On 8 July 2026, Walailak University, led by Associate Professor Dr. Laksanaara Khwanchum, Deputy Director of the Center for Academic Services, and Assistant Professor Dr. Kamol Thinsurat, a lecturer at the School of Engineering and Technology, held a joint meeting with members of the Ban Laem Homestay Community Enterprise in Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The meeting aimed to discuss approaches to developing Ban Laem Homestay into a sustainable green tourism destination, while integrating engineering knowledge, technology, and clean energy solutions into community development.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the university and local community members to exchange ideas, identify challenges and obstacles in the area, and jointly explore practical solutions to strengthen community-based tourism and local infrastructure.

One of the key issues discussed was the feasibility of installing a solar energy system at the community water pumping station. The proposed system is intended to reduce electricity costs, improve water security, and strengthen the community’s ability to cope with future drought risks.

The initiative also aims to develop a smart community water management system by integrating solar energy with intelligent water management technologies. Artificial intelligence, or AI, could be applied to support water-use monitoring and analysis, helping improve the efficiency of resource management. In addition, the project would promote community participation through the establishment of a local water management committee.

The integration of clean energy, technology, and community-based management is expected to reduce energy expenses, enhance access to clean and reliable water, and create mechanisms for generating funds to support long-term system maintenance. The approach also has the potential to serve as a model for sustainable community-level water resource management in other areas.

Another important issue raised during the meeting was insufficient lighting along local water transportation routes, which poses safety concerns for fishermen, residents, and visitors. The meeting therefore discussed suitable lighting solutions, including the proposed installation of LED lights at boat boarding and landing points used by the Ban Laem Homestay community. This measure would improve visibility and safety for water transportation while supporting the continued development of safe and sustainable community-based tourism.

This collaboration reflects the role of the School of Engineering and Technology, Walailak University, in applying engineering knowledge and technology to address real community needs. It also demonstrates the university’s commitment to promoting clean energy, efficient resource management, community participation, and sustainable tourism development that can strengthen local communities over the long term.
