Amazing! Walailak University Engineering Student Wins First Prize in Energy Innovation Competition, Enhancing Community Product Value

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Walailak University congratulates the students under the team name “The SparkEnergy GreenSupercap,” specializing in high-efficiency carbon for energy storage devices, comprising students from the Petrochemical and Polymer Engineering and Electrical Engineering programs. The team members include Miss Pichayapa Boonsuk, Miss Sasipriya Phanthaburi, Mr. Jirachai Aphichaiyakul, Mr. Nitthis Thamrongthepthak, Mr. Pongsapak Hinjiw from the Petrochemical and Polymer Engineering program, and Miss Nongnapas Dawsuwan, Mr. Narathip Chaiyarat, Mr. Hanif Dalasuh from the Electrical Engineering program, guided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uthen Thubsuang and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamol Thinsurat as advisors.
They clinched the top prize in the higher education category at The Young Energy Designer Awards 2023 competition, an initiative organized by the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, Ministry of Energy. The competition aimed to foster young energy innovation designers. The award ceremony took place on December 20, 2566, at the Ramakarden Hotel, Bangkok. The team received an award trophy and a cash prize of 200,000 baht.
Their innovation revolves around carbon charcoal derived from rubberwood sawdust, processed through a two-step acid-base activation method to create porous structures within the wood. When burned, this charcoal produces high-capacity carbon that stores electrical charges efficiently. This innovation adds value to the leftover materials from the wood processing industry in the country. Additionally, the resulting carbon charcoal can be used to produce Supercapacitor electrodes, which are highly sought-after energy storage devices in the current market.
